The nursery is slowly coming together, but what you don’t see – just out of camera view – is a mountain of diapers and a toppling pile of onesies in need of their first washing! Every time I pick up a teeny, tiny outfit or unpack an ittby bitty pair of socks, my heart explodes. I can’t believe we’re about a month out from meeting our little girl!
Until then, we’ve been reorganizing every drawer, cabinet and closet in the home, dropping off donations (I love a good purge more than can be considered normal) and tidying up pesky tasks that have been on our lists for far too long. We’re still waiting on this bookshelf to arrive for the baby’s room, after which we can begin putting items away, dressing the crib and hanging framed art! The much debated rocker arrived last week (we got this one in ivory performance velvet), and although we were just a tidge surprised at how white it is, it couldn’t be more perfect for this small room. The online preview had us thinking it would lean a little more putty, but aside from that, it’s incredibly soft, cozy and surprisingly deep – so much so that I actually need a back pillow for my short legs! Luckily, velvet is one of our favorite family friendly materials, so we’re not too worried about keeping it in shape (I say with hesitation – ha!).
And most recently, we finally hung these pom pom curtains! We say this every time, but curtains absolutely transform a room. The ceilings in the nursery are almost 10′ tall, so we picked up the 108″ length and hung them high and wide (à la John and Sherry) on this matte black extra long rod with matching clips to span the length of both windows. The curtains are the prettiest shade of cream, with subtle stripes and a nice, heavy weight. Although they were a bit more than we’ve spent on curtains in the past (hello, IKEA!), we were pleasantly surprised with how well they were made, and I could not resist the pom pom bunches, especially for a girl’s bedroom! They’re not too baby-ish, so we see them growing with her, too. We layered them with natural shades and a privacy liner – definitely outside of our comfort zone; more on that in a later post – but we’re so happy we did.
The pom pom curtain hunt was a surprisingly long one (or maybe not too surprisingly, as I tend to over research and exhaust all options before buying so much as a bottle of shampoo), and over the course of the weeks – months! – leading up to the purchase, we found a lot of great contenders. In some cases, they didn’t come in lengths long enough for our high ceilings, but with all the searching I did, I can’t help but share a handful of our favorite embellished curtains here. There are a lot of great details that kick these panels up a notch – ruffles and tassels and fringe! – and it’s a really fun way to inject some quirk into any room. And you know that every needs a little touch of quirk, a splash of whimsy, right?
This room is very white on cream on ivory for now, but soon enough, we’ll be layering in colorful art, books and throws. Although, we can’t forget about the big splash of pink in the closet! We can’t wait to share the entire room with you.
